Sci-Comm Coaching, Workshops at the IBA Studio

Visit Booth 1902 to advocate for the industry and share your expertise.

The Independent Beauty Association’s IBA Studio (Booth 1902) will be at NYSCC Suppliers Day to create quality educational content and help industry stakeholders become more effective science communicators.

IBA has partnered with professional science communicator Jen Novakovich of The Ecowell to offer on-the-floor “sci-comm” coaching and collect interviews from attendees.

“Everyone in the cosmetics industry has a role to play in elevating science and truth, and combating misinformation. As a result, everyone stands to benefit from building their scicomm skills,” Novakovich told Happi.  “Science communication, when done well, is a proven strategy that can help meet this challenge. However, when done poorly, there are endless examples of disastrous outcomes from poorly communicated science. This is why training in science communication, and following evidence backed strategies, is so fundamentally important. We have a lot of science looking into what works and what doesn’t—we need to use it. For that, training specific to science communication is critical.”

In addition, IBA Studio is also hosting expert led workshops on the show floor:

  • Navigating Ingredient Data (May 19, 11:00 – 11:30 am)—what do formulators need to know to scientifically vet their ingredients. Featuring:  Lanesa Mahon, MBS, PhD candidate and 2025 recipient of the SCC Madam C.J. Walker Scholarship.
  • Beauty’s Snowballing Misinformation Problem (May 19, 2:00 – 2:30 pm)—why misinformation snowballs in beauty and what to do about it. Featuring: Michelle Niedziela, PhD, behavioral scientist in consumer and market research.
  • Building Inclusive Evidence in Cosmetic Sciences (May 20,  11:00 – 11:30 am)—where are there inclusivity gaps in cosmetic sciences, and what’s the opportunity to fill them. Featuring: AJ Addae, PhD candidate, founder of SULA Labs and finalist for the SCC Madam C.J. Walker Scholarship.
